Monthly podcast: Nueva Forma Listening Pleasures

In just a few short weeks, Creta (formerly known as White Car) will have a new full-length release out titled Closing the Doors of Perception. In leading up to this, we’ve invited him to curate the latest episode of Listening Pleasures. It’s surely a signature Creta mix, a mix that’s a bit more experimental than previous episodes, and includes not only three of his older tracks, but gorgeous cuts from iameb 57 and Lapse. A few words from Creta about his episode:

Herman Melvile once said “the eyes are the gateway to the soul.” I’ve always felt music in general, but even more specifically electronic or alternative music was another one of those gateways. These tracks represent a few of those gateways, portals into a world not far removed from our own, and yet seemingly unfamiliar. A glimpse into the world of another lost soul.

While the days are getting shorter and the ice cream trucks creep through the neighborhoods playing their siren songs with dwindling frequency, we here at Nueva Forma are taking advantage of the lengthening nights of September to bring you more great music out of the darkness. Miori - I Have No Memory Of This Place

Imagine Aaron Sjogren, aka Miori, as your tour guide through an ethereal, illusory land. I Have No Memory of This Place has this sense about it. Miori invites the listener into his domain with open arms for a half-hour exploration of its terrain and inhabitants: mellow grooves, eerie synth patches, acousmatic layering, a filtered and detached voice surfacing here and there. A timeless sense of music emerges from the album as tracks fade in and out, swirling in the atmosphere of its planet. You may find the title fitting as everything feels new while at the same time familiar and comfortable. Sjogren is the conduit, not the architect. Let him show you what he has found. If you want to witness, in a single sitting, the budding and decay of a flower, or perhaps someone driving from Los Angeles to New York City, check out the art of time-lapse photography. If you want to listen to a composer who can successfully and coherently develop a single track through a multitude of concise musical themes, look no further than Lapse. The Living Lucid is not exactly what you’d expect from an IDM artist. Straying from pop sensibilities, the ten cuts on this release have deeper bows to improvising jazz artists of the mid-20th century than to the more immediate predecessors of techno and glitch. Strong polyrhythmic layers permeate the electronic beats while the guitar-driven melodies wander freely from one idea to the next in a stream-of-consciousness bliss. We’re very excited to present you with our Nueva Forma Listening Pleasures, a monthly enhanced podcast featuring artists from our label roster as well as various guest artists.

Our first episode, mixed by the label founders, marks the sonic commencement of new additions to the Nueva Forma family, including Matthew Flook (alias: Pinscape), Charles Garcia (alias: Lapse), and Aaron Sjogren (alias: Miori). You’ll also hear several pre-released tracks from the forthcoming albums of Masmöd and White Car. Lastly, we’re featuring tracks from three guest artists that we take quite a shine to: ElectricWest from Idaho, Recue from Finland, and Reii out of Russia. In fact, we like them so much that we’ve invited them to be on a future compilation (more to be disclosed later).
