Classic Records as Pelican Book Covers
May 12th, 2009 by elle™

I love LittlePixel’s Flickr set of what he describes as “Classic records lost in time and format, re-emerged as Pelican books.” If only such a thing existed. They are all quite gorgeous, and I’ve posted some of my favourites below. You can also discover more lovely little things at http://www.littlepixel.info.

Stumbled upon the Tweet a Sound application the other day, and thought it was pretty interesting.  Tweet a Sound is a desktop application, created using Max/MSP, that allows a user to create various 60 second sound clips using the synthesis engine, and once completed, you can upload the sound script to your twitter. The idea is to copy the sound script from twitter, and paste it into your Tweet a Sound application. By doing so, you’re able to decipher the sound of the sound script, and you can play back what other users create. Kind of a nice and creative way to communicate with others. For more information on Tweet a Sound, be sure to visit » sound + design. You can also follow sound + design on » twitter.

Pirate Bay Founders Jailed…

Just got word that the founders of the Pirate Bay (the ever popular bit torrent) were found guilty of breaking copyright law, and are sentenced to a year in Jail, and a fine of £31m. If you’re not familiar with the Pirate Bay, you’ve either been living under a rock for the last decade, or you have a life. Either way, this is big news, and I must admit, I’m surprised that they were actually found guilty of piracy, and sentenced at all. The major fact of the matter that contributes to my bewilderment is that the Pirate Bay founders reside in Sweden (and from what I understand, copyright law is very loose, to non-existent over there).

VJ Kung Fu Structure Tutorial
April 13th, 2009 by anthony™

Came across this pretty helpful VJ site called VJ Kung Fu / http://vjkungfu.tv. From the looks of it, it’s more like a community site, where users upload videos that touch on DIY methods for VJs, and what helps to produce the best live shows. This particular episode touches on the structure of a VJ performance. Thought it was pretty helpful for any other VJs out there who’re either just getting their feet wet, or are looking to expand their live shows with something a little more dynamic…

Looks like the guy in the tutorial uses a monome 128 to split up the structure of his visuals. Kind of a dope way of “structuring” video, while still making it  more of a hands on experience.

Stumbled across these while searching for portable listening devices. Audio Technica’s AT-727 Sound Burger & AT-770 Mr. Disc. Yep! With names like those, it’s hard to believe that they never made the popular vote. Even though they may not be as portable as an iPod, it would be damn hilarious to catch someone trying to jog with one of these strapped to their leg. :)

Last Night A DJ Saved My Life
March 31st, 2009 by anthony™
The History Of The Disc Jockey

The History Of The Disc Jockey

Last Night A DJ Saved My Life is probably one of the most honest, straight forward, influential reads, based on the history of the Disc Jockey. Authored by: Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton, this book Spans all genres, while touching on a lot of out-standing, unanswered questions, i.e. “How did the DJ come to be?”, and “Are DJs really that important?” It also gets pretty in depth with the conception of ASCAP, BMI, and other music industry watchdogs that were conceptualized for the sole purpose of “keeping the Radio DJ in check.” Not to mention, the seemingly obvious process of payola.

Having read this, I can honestly say, it’s totally changed my perspective on the music industry, and I now have an even greater respect for the DJ. I highly recommend this book to anyone who’s interested in getting heavily involved in the music industry; whether it be running a label, DJing for a living, performing in a band, or producing, this book is super informative, and definitely eliminates any preconceived notions that tend to pop up among the “experts” in this industry.

Also, a quick shout out to Rodrigo Corral, for the beautiful book cover design, and Jocelyn Miller, for the beautiful photography.

The Nostalgia of Cassette Tapes
March 30th, 2009 by elle™

Last month, we had touched on vintage cassette tape inserts and how awesome the designs are. Perhaps it’s the nostalgia of growing up in the era of analog sounds, or that everything old is back in fashion, but the aesthetic of cassette tapes still have profound desire and influence in modern society. This post pays homage to the cassette tape, and the unique ways that we’ve tried to preserve it by bridging the gap between digital and analog. Here are some of my favorite mods and hybrids:

NVDRS Tape by Stefano Pertegato

I’d like to describe the NVDRS Tape, but the images already speak for themselves:
